Position:

A long narrow strip development between the coast road and the sea. Generally flat terrain backed by fertile agricultural land with the red soil typical of the area.

Description:

Protaras is a modern resort having grown from virtually nothing in the late 1970s. The great attraction of the area is the coastline with fine white sand beaches, and natural rocky coves. The main resort stretches over 4 miles, with hotels spread all along it but concentrations at two points: the beach around Fig Tree Bay, and to a lesser extent the Pernera Beach area. A smaller third resort area is developing farther N, closer to the village of Paralimni. On the road to Ayia Napa is Cape Greco, an area of extreme natural beauty, with secluded beaches and coves.

Suitability:

Mainly middlemarket families and couples wanting some entertainment and shopping but not the boisterous nightlife or youth market appeal of neighbouring Ayia Napa. Most hotels close in winter leaving just a few to cater for senior citizens and those wanting a really quiet time.

Accommodation:

Over 60 tourist hotels and apartments mainly in the middle to upper categories.

Shopping:

Plenty of shops, but of limited variety. For serious shopping, Ayia Napa, 10 miles S, is far better. More typical local shops and supermarkets at Paralimni.

Beach:

Fine beaches with white sand, and crystal clear water. Shingle and flat rocks at the water's edge in some places. Some rocky coves. Plenty of sunbeds and parasols etc for hire. Water sports.

Entertainments:

Daytime: water sports at all beaches. Nightlife: at least 2 discos, and some tavernas with live music. Karaoke bars. Wider choice at Ayia Napa.

Eating:

Large selection of tavernas and restaurants for all tastes.

Public-transport:

Hourly bus to Ayia Napa and Paralimni during the day. Taxis.

Local-excursions:

All tour operators arrange their own excursions, covering the whole of Cyprus.
