CALA LLONGA
Area: Ibiza
Country: Spain
Location:
Central SE coast. 7 miles NE of Ibiza, 4 miles SW of Santa Eulalia and 11 miles NE of the airport.
Telephone code from UK:
34
Position:
On a deeply curved, E-facing bay with a beach of gently shelving sand. Surrounded by pine-covered hills on three sides.
Description:
A pleasant, completely purpose-built mini-resort hugging the bay. The centre directly behind the beach has an informal and relaxed atmosphere but little local character. The principal hotels dominate on either side of the bay overlooking the beach, with low-rise apartments, shops and cafes at the centre and further apartments and villas dotting the pine-covered, S-facing hillside. Architecture is simple and modest.
Suitability:
Budget to middlemarket. Suited to families with children (owing to very safe beach) and to couples not seeking lively entertainment. Adolescents will soon become bored and the less mobile will find the hilly terrain unsuitable.
Accommodation:
Handful of 3-star hotels dominate beach area, but overall there are more apartment beds in the resort, distributed over a wide area behind the beach and in the surrounding hills.
Shopping:
Limited selection of typical resort-style shops including small supermarkets. A small parade offers sport, fashion and luggage items. Most visitors go to Santa Eulalia or Ibiza town for much larger range of shops.
Beach:
Deep, wide, sandy cove has gently shelving sea entry and plenty of loungers and sun shades. Children's play area at rear.
Entertainments:
Daytime: water sports, horse riding, tennis, golf (3 miles away); small amusement park behind centre. Nightlife: subdued; single disco or hotel-organised shows.
Eating:
Limited choice of casual restaurants supplemented by snack bars. A couple of refined options hidden away. English and Spanish dishes are easily encountered, and at least one pizzeria.
Public-transport:
Nine buses per working day to Ibiza town, 12 to Santa Eulalia. Ferry service to Santa Eulalia, Es Cana, Ibiza town, and daily to Formentera. Taxis are a little scarce.
Local-excursions:
Island coach tour. Boat trips to Formentera and other resorts. Glass-bottom boat trips. Aquaman Splashdown _ water park visit. Finca Feast _ traditionally prepared food in countryside location. Hillbilly Hoedown _ Wild West evening. Visit to casino with live show. Ibiza by night.
