CAMP de MAR
Area: Majorca
Country: Spain
Location:
On the SW coast, 16 miles W of Palma and 24 miles from the airport.
Telephone code from UK:
34
Position:
A valley between two rocky headlands creates a flat area leading to the beach. Most of the resort buildings are on a low rise to one side, with apartments on higher slopes.
Description:
A deep, sheltered bay with a S-facing beach and an islet, reached by a rickety causeway, which is the site of a restaurant. A square watch-tower behind the beach and another on the headland are reminders of the days when this coast was terrorised by pirates. Now it's the day trippers who disturb the peace, on high days and holidays, at least.
Suitability:
This small resort holds wide appeal for its beach, attractive situation, and ease of access to nearby towns such as Paguera and Puerto de Andraitx, both 3 miles.
Accommodation:
A handful of hotels of different character but in similar price range. There are quite a few apartments but further development seems to have halted.
Shopping:
A handful of souvenir shops and a couple of minimarkets.
Beach:
An excellent one, broad and deep, with fine, light sand. It is protected by headlands, gently shelving, equipped with pedalloes and usual beach furniture.
Entertainments:
Daytime: beach activities. Nightlife: provided by hotels for their guests.
Eating:
Four or five pubs vie with each other for the bar and restaurant trade.
Public-transport:
Half-hourly bus to Paguera and an infrequent service to Palma and Andraitx.
Local-excursions:
Old town of Andraitx with Wednesday market; cliff coast around Baħalbufar; further N to Valldemosa, Deya and Soller; Marineland; Palma.
