PAGUERA
Area: Majorca
Country: Spain

Location:

On the SW coast, 14 miles W of Palma, 20 miles from the airport.

Telephone code from UK:

34

Position:

Undulating land on the margin of a broad, S-facing bay; sheltered behind by steep wooded hills.

Description:

A bypass takes some traffic away from the resort. The main coast road is packed for most of its º ml length with shops, bars and restaurants, so the reduction in traffic now makes this slightly easier to negotiate. Tourists and traffic compete for limited space creating a bustling, thriving atmosphere _ if occasionally chaotic. There are quiet, winding residential streets on the uphill side, where most of the hotels are located, though parking is a problem even here. Small park with pine trees, near the tourist office, has a fair sized water slide.

Suitability:

A lively, crowded resort favoured by German visitors who make up the vast majority here. It would be regarded by most as being of superior quality to, say, Magalluf, but equally it is not ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Traffic and hills make this a less than ideal venue for the elderly or disabled.

Accommodation:

More hotels than apartments, which accounts for the large numbers of bars and restaurants here. There are a few good-class 4-star establishments but most are in the middle order.

Shopping:

Dozens of souvenir shops and an adequate provision of minimarkets should meet most needs.

Beach:

The better ones are on the E side. Those in the central bay area are very narrow and crowded but shallow, equipped with pedalloes and good for children. All are of moderately fine, light sand.

Entertainments:

Daytime: water sports, 2 golf clubs nearby. Nightlife: several small-scale disco-bars and nightspots include names like Bavaria and Graf Zeppelin. Shows in hotels.

Eating:

Bistros, pavement cafes, seafood and general restaurants are here in particularly generous numbers.

Public-transport:

Buses to Magalluf, Illetas, half-hourly. Also through buses, Palma-Andraitx, every 50 minutes or so.

Local-excursions:

The historic town of Andraitx; the city of Palma and the scenic, mountainous NW (Ba±albufar, Valldemosa) are easily accessible. Marineland is 9 miles. Hotels also organise excursions to further attractions such as the caves of Drach on the E coast.
