PORTO CRISTO
Area: Majorca
Country: Spain
Location:
Middle of E coast, 40 miles E of Palma and airport. 8 miles E of Manacor.
Telephone code from UK:
34
Position:
Surrounded by low hills and flat orchards, approached by improved roads.
Description:
A natural harbour protected by rocky headlands and with a sandy beach is the focus of the old town, which is arranged in a grid of narrow streets on rising ground immediately above. A narrow inlet between low cliffs provides shelter for fishing and pleasure boats. This is an active regional town first, and a resort second. It is appealing rather than beautiful, has authentic character and some very good sea views. It also has the caves of Drach on its doorstep, and those of Hams within a mile. These are among the biggest tourist draws in the whole of Majorca.
Suitability:
A quiet, family resort, with pleasant strolls in the town and along the quayside but limited entertainment.
Accommodation:
Mainly modest hotels, a few apartments. A couple of 3-star establishments outside the town.
Shopping:
A good range, such as one would expect in a thriving small town. Many warehouses and Majorica pearl stores in Manacor, which also has a Monday market.
Beach:
The town beach is 300 yds long and can become very crowded. Several pretty, quieter bays can be reached by public transport, within a few miles in both directions.
Entertainments:
Daytime: relaxation is the principal holiday activity. Nightlife: the town has a couple of discos.
Eating:
Terrace restaurants overlook the harbour. Plenty of choice, if no great variety. Several near the caves of Drach, including fast-food variety.
Public-transport:
Regular (approximately hourly) coastal service for about 8 miles in each direction. 5 buses a day to Palma.
Local-excursions:
Caves and more caves. Interesting old town of Arta. Alcudia, Pollensa and Formentor are a longer haul. Palma.
