34
Website:
http://www.cim.net/municipis/andratx/i_index.html
Position:
At head of a deep, almost fjord-like inlet.
Description:
A small scale commercial fishing port and marina with over 300 moorings. It has an authentic Majorcan feel with its older buildings and narrow streets, very unlike the resorts nearer Palma. The enclosing headlands are forested and magnificent, but badly scarred by some truly awful villa developments, perched precariously on the heights.
Suitability:
A good base for those who prefer some real atmosphere but are prepared to travel to a beach. Not, therefore, for young children.
Accommodation:
A scattering of mainly smaller hotels and apartments.
Shopping:
All essentials obtainable. Wednesday market in Andraitx.
Beach:
Just a couple of tiny corners of sand _ literally only a few yards long. But an excellent one at Camp de Mar _ 3 mile road through pine woods.
Entertainments:
Daytime: water sports, walks, beach. Nightlife: no formal provision.
Eating:
A host of waterfront restaurants with seafood pre-eminent.
Public-transport:
Regular bus to Andraitx; thereafter connection with coastal routes to Palma.
Local-excursions:
The historic town of Andraitx; Palma; the rugged coast and the villages of the NW coast.
