Position:

Mijas nestles on high ground in the foothills of Sierra de Mijas.

Description:

It is perhaps the most popular village in the area, well-kept and beautiful if hardly typical of Andalucia. Some hundreds of foreigners live here. A very hilly village, all streets steeply up and down. Has an attractive central Plaza, which is also home to the "Mijas Burro" taxi service _ over a hundred donkeys taking tourists on a rather short and bumpy ride through the village.

Shopping:

The whole length of the main street is lined with gift shops; side streets are packed with bars and restaurants.

Beach:

The nearest is the 3 mile stretch of sandy beach at Fuengirola 5 miles away.

Entertainments:

Daytime: Inmaculada church, museum of miniatures, the bullring. For tennis fans, half-way down to Fuengirola is the tennis club owned by Lew Hoad, ex-Wimbledon champion. During summer months there are all kinds of evening outdoor cultural shows including the occasional open-air flamenco night. Nightlife: nothing much in the way of evening entertainment.

From the cheap and cheerful to exclusive upmarket.

Public-transport:

A half-hourly bus service runs between Mijas and Fuengirola and every hour between Mijas and Torremolinos.
