Description:

A purpose-built still-developing tourist resort of approximately 1» miles square, situated around a partly natural, partly man-made sandy beach. It is sometimes known as El Castillo de Fuste, the "Castillo" (castle) referring to an 18th-century watchtower by the harbour, near a small marina and lighthouse. The castle is the only item of historical interest in an otherwise modern resort made up of white low-rise apartment blocks interspersed with rows of palms. The development has grown up either side of the coast road, the two halves linked by a tunnel. Nuevo Horizonte _ also known locally as Costa de Antigua _ has been developing since 1990 in a mixture of styles. The coastline at this point is rocky with the main usable beach in Caleta, so resort life centres around each complex's pool; the only alternative to this is Lagos de Antigua, a seawater swimming lake with minimal restaurants and shops nearby.

Suitability:

Anyone in search of an effortless beach holiday and not much nightlife. Good for families and keen golfers. Nuevo Horizonte appeals to economy-minded people happy to spend their holiday around the pool.

Accommodation:

Mainly middle-range, low-rise apartment complexes, apart from a large golfing development which offers higher-category hotel accommodation. Nuevo Horizonte's apartments and aparthotels are more basic.

Shopping:

Little beyond basic necessities.

Beach:

Playa Caleta de Fuste is the focal point of the resort. It has good sand and thatched parasols, and as it's protected by a breakwater, it's safer for young children. It is a one-mile walk along the coast path from Nuevo Horizonte, which has no beach of its own.

Entertainments:

Daytime: easy windsurfing, squash, cycle hire. Nightlife: a few pubs. Determined fun seekers may find the odd disco open, but would need to look hard. Most complexes in Nuevo Horizonte provide some sort of evening entertainment.

Eating:

Small but varied range of restaurants, bars and cafes. Nuevo Horizonte has only one restaurant not part of accommodation complex.

Public-transport:

Hourly bus to Puerto del Rosario; regular daily service to Corralejo. From Nuevo Horizonte, regular daily service to Caleta de Fuste and Puerto del Rosario.
