JANDIA
Area: Fuerteventura
Country: Spain

Location:

On the coast, towards the S tip of the island of Fuerteventura. 39 miles SW of Caleta de Fuste, 47 miles SW of Puerto del Rosario, 44 miles SW of the airport.

Telephone code from UK:

34

Position:

A spine of dry hills runs towards the narrow S extremity of the island, separated from the 20-mile-long beach by sand dunes.

Description:

A compact, established nucleus sits on a low cliff looking out over the Atlantic. The modern, purpose-built resort spreads along the coast in either direction; more interesting are the lonely, desolate dunes fringing the vast, sandy beach and the neighbouring traditional fishing village of Morro Jable, 1 mile W of Jandia.

Suitability:

Virtually unlimited summertime sun, sea and sand, suiting families and couples alike. Very little in the way of entertainment or sightseeing. Strong German presence.

Accommodation:

Mostly 4-star hotels and low- to upper-category apartments, nearly all with good range of facilities.

Shopping:

Among the usual tourist shops that line the beach front it is possible to find tax-free bargains, such as perfumes, watches and electronics (but watch out for Panashibas and Tecnix). One fairly large and expanding shopping centre.

Beach:

The main attraction. Miles of soft, light sands, rising to wind-blown dunes in places, and sloping down to clean, clear waters. Much favoured by naturists as well as families. A fresh Atlantic breeze can be bracing at times.

Entertainments:

Daytime: windsurfing (with tuition), sailing, pedalloes, diving (six schools), snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, horse riding, jeep safaris. Nightlife: evening entertainment laid on by hotels, the »-ml "strip" along the beachfront has some lively bars and cafes; a few late-night bars in the shopping centre. Three discos (two are hotel-based).

Eating:

A good, if unexciting, choice of restaurants and fast-food joints. A more traditional selection can be found in Morro Jable.

Public-transport:

Eight buses per day run between Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable; a direct service runs three times a day. Hourly service to Costa Calma from early morning until late evening.

Local-excursions:

See Corralejo.
