PERAMA
Area: Corfu
Country: Greece

Location:

On E coast, 5 miles S of Corfu Town; 4 miles S of airport.

Telephone code from UK:

30 26610

Position:

On elevated stretch of coast road with sea below to one side and verdant steeply rising hills on other.

Description:

Close to the airport and subject to some noise, Perama stretches intermittently along half a mile or so of busy, winding main coast road, with a cluster of amenities situated in a short 300-yard burst. It can hardly be classed a resort _ it is more a collection of tavernas with the odd shop and car/scooter rental places _ and, although bustling in the past, it has become a little depressed latterly, with a few shops and one or two other sites closed up. There are some restaurants and hotels well positioned to give romantic views across the water to Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island. About half a mile away, there is a narrow causeway across to Kanoni on the opposite side of Halikiopoulos Lagoon; those walking across it when a plane descends may fear for their lives!

Suitability:

Self-sufficient types. Not suitable for the elderly or infirm owing to steps to coves; nothing particular for children or teenagers.

Accommodation:

Couple of moderate hotels, supplemented by private rooms for rent and one or two self-catering options.

Shopping:

Limited to basic necessities. Nothing useful like a bank, cashpoint or pharmacy.

Beach:

Small shingle coves, all of which are reached by steep steps down from coast road. No golden sand and few amenities. Where Gerald Durrell first discovered Corfu's aquatic wildlife.

Entertainments:

Daytime: low key and limited to lying in the sun. Nightlife: mainly confined to the hotels themselves. Nearby Benitses has more choice.

Eating:

Small selection of tavernas and restaurants, some with panoramic sea views.

Public-transport:

Buses roughly every 45 minutes to Corfu Town and every 1» hours S towards Kavos. 13 times daily to/from Benitses. Car and scooter rental.

Local-excursions:

Half day: Achillion Palace; seashell museum in nearby Benitses. Full day: boat trip to Mouse Island. Also see Corfu Town.
