KOMENO
Area: Corfu
Country: Greece

Location:

On a tiny peninsula jutting from the E coast of the island, 7 miles N of Corfu Town and airport and 16 miles SW of Kassiopi. Halfway between Corfu Town and Ipsos.

Telephone code from UK:

30 26610

Position:

On the N side of Gouvia Bay, on a hilly wooded headland, facing vast Gouvia marina on opposite side. Views take in the sweep of the bay.

Description:

Komeno hardly qualifies as a resort _ it is more a tiny settlement surrounded by olive trees, lying 350 yards off the main road running from Corfu Town to the N of the island. It is basically a residential area full of exclusive gated private villas, and access to these and the hotels is by way of a road so narrow that traffic lights are needed at either end _ they seem to be perpetually red. The "centre" consists of a small general shop disguising itself as a "supermarket", a small restaurant and a scooter-hire place. There is an unsealed road that leads to a small chapel out by the bay which makes for a nice walk.

Suitability:

For those wanting a quiet holiday; suited to mature couples. Nothing for children or teenagers.

Accommodation:

A few large hotels with all amenities; generally tucked away. Private rooms for rent. One small block of apartments.

Shopping:

Hardly anything outside the hotels; nearest varied shops at Dassia, 1 mile, or Gouvia, 1» miles.

Beach:

Limited to a minuscule sliver of sand near the chapel and those of the hotels.

Entertainments:

Daytime and nightlife: in the hotels and at nearby Dassia and Gouvia.

Eating:

One or two tavernas relatively close to the hotels, otherwise just one small restaurant. Choice at Gouvia or Dassia.

Public-transport:

Long-distance buses from Corfu Town to N resorts and half-hourly service from Corfu Town to Dassia: these stop on the main road, 350 yards from the "supermarket" and not in Komeno itself.
