AGHIOS GORDIOS
Area: Corfu
Country: Greece

Location:

Peaceful setting against a backdrop of tree-covered hills, approached by a steep road.

Telephone code from UK:

30 26610

Description:

A rural community in olive and lemon groves, with an authentic Greek atmosphere. Fishing and farming come ahead of tourism in the local economy. Around the beach, though, it's a busy holiday resort, crowded with visitors. Paints a dramatic picture: a great curve ending at a steep craggy islet. Feels a bit isolated due to surrounding cliffs and poor transport system.

Suitability:

Walkers and nature lovers. Seekers of quiet beach holiday.

Accommodation:

Villas, apartments and good class hotels.

Shopping:

A few supermarkets, souvenir shops. Two doctors, one chemist. No bank but many money-changers. Nightlife: beachside disco, supplemented by tavernas.

Beach:

A mile of sand and pebble; nudism frowned upon. Pedalloes, sunbeds etc for hire.

Entertainments:

A handful of tavernas, renowned for local produce and fish; fast food and tourist eateries.

Eating:

Four buses per day to Corfu Town from June to August; service can be erratic.

Public-transport:

Boat trips from Paleokastritsa. Coach trips from Aghios Gordios. Mountain town of Pelekas for spectacular views and nightlife. Sightseeing trips to Corfu Town. See also Corfu Town.

Local-excursions:

Midway down the W coast of the island, 12 miles SW of Corfu Town and airport.
