Position:
Reached along a serpentine road winding around the mountainside en route to Skala. On a wide bay with good views of the Ionian sea, the island of Zante, and Killini on the mainland.
Description:
A quiet, secluded fishing village, surrounded by picturesque scenery, with some interesting places to visit nearby.
Suitability:
For people who like walking and bird-watching as well as sunbathing. Upmarket, middlemarket, couples, singles, families.
Accommodation:
Simple tavernas and pensions, most of which are located on the edge of the village, although there are a few small studio buildings near the sea.
Shopping:
Nothing local apart from a limited minimarket; Argostoli is a better option.
Beach:
Good long sandy beach.
Entertainments:
Daytime: lazing on the beach watching the fishermen, exploring Kefalonia by car or going on excursions. Local places of interest include the village of Markopoulo which is built on a rise with panoramic views. The village is tiny but has become well-known for a phenomenon which coincides with the annual festivities in honour of the Virgin Mary in mid-August. It is said that large numbers of small harmless snakes appear around the Church of Our Lady on the eve of St Mary's Day (15 August). This is considered miraculous and is meant to bring good luck. Nightlife: drinking ouzo with fishermen. The nearest disco is in Skala.

Three or four tavernas offering traditional Greek food, particularly fish.
Public-transport:
Daily bus service into Argostoli.
Local-excursions:
Combined with those on offer to clients in Skala, including Olympia, Ithaca and island tours.
