Position:
Spread out around a large bay approached along mountain roads.
Description:
Poros offers a fine combination of sea and mountain scenery and still feels very much like a traditional village. The harbour, around a small peninsula, offers easy access by ferry to Killini on the mainland and Greece's most important classical site _ Olympia _ beyond. There is no bank or post office, but money can be changed at hotels and tourist offices. There is a local first aid station.
Suitability:
Middlemarket couples and singles _ not particularly suited to families with small children as it lacks a good sandy beach.
Accommodation:
A block of a few rooms with ancient plumbing and infrequent supply of hot water can be officially classed as a hotel in Poros, depending upon the date of construction. However, there is a choice of hotels, pensions and self-catering accommodation. Some of the newer studios are to a very high standard.
Beach:
The long beach is mainly stone and shingle. There are sunbeds and parasols for hire as well as water sports facilities. Small boats are available to explore otherwise inaccessible sandy coves. There is also a small pebble town beach bordering clean water suitable for swimming.
Entertainments:
Daytime: a small tennis club and children's playground. Nightlife: one disco that looks like a bunker.
Eating:
Tavernas specialising in fresh fish; restaurants offering international cuisine.
Public-transport:
Daily bus into Argostoli (1 hour journey). There are usually a couple of taxis available from Poros.
Local-excursions:
Island tour; S village tour; Greek night at Argostoli bouzouki club. Boat trips can be arranged to the islands of Lefkas, Ithaca and Zante.
