Backed by mountains with extensive countryside and olive groves.

Description:
A typical Greek resort which is slowly catching on to idea of tourism. Spread over a large area it is not built up and has a feeling of freedom and relaxation.

Suitability:
Anyone wanting a peaceful holiday (notwithstanding regular aircraft noise), more likely to please families, couples and older people.

Accommodation:
Several pleasant hotels; also self-catering studios.

Shopping:
Local minimarkets with good choice. Several tourist shops available, but Zakynthos town is fairly close offers more choice.

Beach:
An extension of Laganas Beach, Kalamaki has the same qualities: unspoilt sand with superb clear water. Occasionally used by nesting turtles. Pedalloes available.

Entertainments:
Daytime: long winding roads backed by mountains and olive groves for peaceful walks whilst watching the planes take off and land. Nightlife: one disco just outside the resort at the top of a hill. Also a few bars offering family entertainment _ karaoke and quiz nights.

Eating:
Home to some of the best traditional Greek tavernas on Zante. Some restaurants serve English food, but it's worth going Greek because of the quality of the food.

Public-transport:
Erratic bus service (5 a day) running to Zakynthos town. Taxis at the rank at the main junction of the resort, but scarce after midnight.
