Position:
NW coast, with large mountain range immediately behind.

Description:
Still a small village atmosphere with not too much building yet.

Suitability:
For those who want a quiet stretch of beachfront and not too much hustle. Couples, families of all ages, but with economy in mind.

Accommodation:
One or two larger hotels, but generally lower category or self-catering.

Shopping:
Maleme is still only a village but there is a bakery and some food shops; also some souvenir and general stores. The next village is not too far away for most other items.

Beach:
Long sweeping grey pebble beaches with good bathing _ but thick towels required! A good selection of major water sports available close to hotel; sun beds and umbrellas can be hired.

Entertainments:
Daytime: good walking as well as sunbathing. The German war cemetery from World War II. Nightlife: local tavernas and a disco, also special Greek evenings at a local hotel.

Eating:
A taverna or two in the beach area, the hotels will provide interesting local dishes.

Public-transport:
Buses to Chania and W to Kastelli; local car hire and bikes, taxis.

Local-excursions:
Samaria Gorge, Europe's longest, is the big attraction for those who enjoy serious walks; Chania and Knossos day trips.
