Position:
S coast backed by high mountains.

Description:
After journeying through the mountains you are aware of the remoteness. It has the air of an attractive oasis, surrounded by the natural beauty of flora and fauna.

Suitability:
Couples, families, walkers and those interested in an abundance of indigenous flora. Middle and budget-conscious market. Not really suitable as a touring base.

Accommodation:
Limited to small number of average hotels and apartments. Camping site.

Shopping:
Food stores, local village shops provide craft wares and tourist souvenirs, along with beach requisites.

Beach:
Good stretch of sand and pebble, some small sandy bays can be found within walking distance. General water sports facilities along with sunbeds and umbrellas are obtainable (charge).

Entertainments:
Daytime: good walks, boats, archaeological sites, botany. Nightlife: mainly found at hotels, some bars, one or two discos.

Eating:
Couple of dozen local restaurants and tavernas, ranging from basic to modern Greek style food. Half a dozen village bars.

Public-transport:
Buses to Rethymnon, taxis, car and bike hire.

Local-excursions:
Organised and offered through the hotels and local travel operators _ to archaeological and historic sites such as Samaria Gorge, Rethymnon, Chania and Knossos. Boat trips.
