MASTIHARI
Area: Kos
Country: Greece

Location:

Middle of the N coast, 18 miles W of Kos town and 5 miles N of the airport.

Telephone code from UK:

30 22420

Position:

Breezier N coast, near the midpoint, approached by a side road off the central highway. The coastal plain here gives way to undulating ground.

Description:

A little known and even less developed seaside village and fishing hamlet until recent years. The large port installation was the stimulus for change, and Mastihari is now spreading inland rapidly. The road descends into a bare, open square with the beach to one side and the port, protected by a breakwater and headland, to the other. The suddenness of its expansion gives the resort a certain rawness, though there are still some traces of Greek Island charm.

Suitability:

The get-away-from-it enthusiasts, though it is no longer suitable for true recluses.

Accommodation:

Many humble lodgings in the port area, the hotels are scattered in the hinterland.

Shopping:

Limited. Better in Kos.

Beach:

Broad and sandy, though the sea throws up weed after a strong blow. Facilities include sunbeds, parasols.

Entertainments:

Very limited locally.

Eating:

Simple tavernas and restaurants, especially near the beach.

Public-transport:

Regular daily bus to Kos.

Local-excursions:

Boat trips to Pserimos and Kalimnos; otherwise, as Kos.
