SAMI
Area: Kefalonia
Country: Greece

Location:

NE coast, 16 miles NE of Argostoli, 18 miles NE of the airport by adequate though mountainous roads.

Telephone code from UK:

30 26740

Position:

On a broad bay with green hills rising steeply inland.

Description:

A small port with a compact grid layout comprising unremarkable, low-rise buildings and facing the harbour at an attractive, taverna-lined waterfront. There is a regular ferry from here to the island of Ithaka, rising impressively across the bay to the N.

Suitability:

Appeals for the greenery and scenery of its surrounding hills, good potential for walking, small town charm, accessibility to Ithaca and beautiful beaches nearby. Entirely unsuited to a beach-and-nightlife holiday.

Accommodation:

Small, intimate hotels, guest houses and apartments, usually family-run.

Shopping:

All day-to-day and holiday requirements can be met but there are few touristy gift shops.

Beach:

Pebbly town beach holds little appeal but there is a better one a Karavomilos, 1 mile W, and outstanding at Antisamos, a hard-going 2 miles NE.

Entertainments:

Limited to tavernas and bars.

Eating:

Tavernas, several of them enticingly sited within the sound of the harbour's lapping waters.

Public-transport:

Three buses per day from Argostoli. Occasional high season buses to Assos and Fiskardo.

Local-excursions:

Melissani and Drogharati caves, and the fishing village of Aghia Efimia, are within a few miles of Sami, otherwise see Argostoli.
