Description:
Retains some local colour in older part, uphill from main road; on coast side, all is modern, low-rise tourist development but quite appealing with a paved beachfront promenade decorated with flower tubs and iron lamp-posts. More of a big village than a small town.
Suitability:
Proximity to beach is ideal for families; flat promenade is reasonably disabled-friendly. Good for relaxing beach holiday for most types.
Accommodation:
Private villas and apartments predominate; small guest houses along seafront.
Shopping:
Better than most on coast with full complement of boutiques and jewellery stores supplementing basic provisions and souvenir outlets.Nightlife: late tavernas and music bars, with a couple of "pubs" thrown in for good measure.
Beach:
Very long, narrow strip of light sand and shingle interrupted by short breakwaters.
Entertainments:
Big choice of tavernas, pizzerias, steak and fish restaurants.
Eating:
6 buses daily, Paliouri to Thessaloniki and back.
Public-transport:
Mount Athos boat trip from Ouranopolis; sightseeing/shopping to Thessaloniki; Classical Tour to Pella and Veria (full day); exploring some of the inland and fishing villages; caves of Petralona.
Local-excursions:
At the S end of the E coast of the Kassandra peninsula. 64 miles SE of Thessaloniki, 59 SE of its airport, by good, fast road.
