At narrow isthmus, where a canal cuts through. Gateway to the undulating agricultural lands and tourist resorts of Kassandra peninsula.

Description:

On the site of ancient Greek city of same name, its modern descendant straddles main road, a neat settlement of 2-storey houses and holiday homes which sleeps in winter, as many are second homes of city dwellers. Has pretty square and some old fashioned shops but is generally without interest. Has two coastlines, E and W, with small marinas.

Suitability:

Not really a package destination, but in the high season an adequate place for beach and restaurants.

Accommodation:

A few small hotels supplement the private villas; larger hotels on road in and out.

Shopping:

Small stores cater for basic provisions but little else.Nightlife: generally none. Impromptu, high season only.

Beach:

200 yds of moderate quality sand on E side of town.

Entertainments:

A dozen options, none very exciting, many of them facing the beach.

Eating:

8 buses a day from Thessaloniki to Kalithea, further down peninsula.

Public-transport:

Mount Athos boat trips from Ouranopolis; sightseeing/shopping to Thessaloniki; Classical Tour to Pella and Veria (full day); exploring some of the inland villages; caves of Petralona.

Local-excursions:

On the E side of the "neck" of Kassandra peninsula. 42 miles SE of Thessaloniki, 37 miles SE of airport by good, fast road.
