On one of two peninsulas that extend SE from the island like pincers. 11 miles SE of Zakynthos and 12 miles SE of the airport.

Position:

On SE coast of the island. Area is formed by the Skopos mountain range.

Description:

More typically Greek than any other resort on the island; home to olive groves and local farms. You are more likely to see a donkey here than anywhere else on the island. Vasilikos is a large sprawling resort, very hilly with long, winding roads.

Suitability:

Beach and nature lovers, due to its distance from the madding crowds.

Accommodation:

Mostly basic self-catering studios, but there are one or two hotels.

Shopping:

Not a great deal of local crafts but ample minimarkets.

Beach:

Undoubtedly the best on the island. Sandy, and stretches along the whole of the coast. Good area for locating secluded coves. Water sports are available at the two more well-known beaches of Mavratzis and St Nicholas. Scuba diving also available.

Entertainments:

Daytime: Sunbathing, water sports and long walks in the mountains and pine forests. Nightlife: Various discos and bars, but the only access is by car or moped.

Eating:

Several very good traditional Greek tavernas.

Public-transport:

Taxis have to be called from Zante town and may prove expensive. A local bus service in high season.

Available from the larger resorts on the island. You may well have to pay for a taxi to connect into one of following: Island tour (full day). Greek night (evening) _ traditional Greek food, dancers and singers. Kefalonia (full day) to neighbouring island. Various boat tours (full day). Olympia (full day) mainland tour by bus to the home of the Olympic games. Athens (2 days) Greek capital for sightseeing.
