KAVOS
Area: Corfu
Country: Greece
Location:
On the S tip of the island, 30 miles S of Corfu town and airport.
Telephone code from UK:
30 26620
Position:
In fairly flat country facing the distant hills of the Greek mainland.
Description:
Since the mid-1980s, all trace of the original Greek village has been obliterated by the burgeoning low-rise resort. At night, neighbours compete to see who has the loudest sound system. Kavos has a 5-mile sweep of sandy beach and is the most action-packed spot on the island. While there is a fast pace of nightlife, some locals still maintain their traditional lifestyle alongside the sun-and-fun seekers. Just over a mile away is Aghios Petros (see separate resort report).
Suitability:
British youngsters and groups under 30 from June to September; most ages for the remainder of the year. Older couples and families may find Aghios Petros more to their liking.
Accommodation:
Self-catering and small pensions.
Shopping:
Selection of minimarkets and souvenir shops.
Beach:
The sandy beach stretches from Kavos to beyond Aghios Petros, the wider section dotted with parasols. Some parts are weedy and eroded. Very shallow water provides safe swimming for children.
Entertainments:
Daytime: usually spent on the beach recovering from the night before. Nightlife: over 75 bars, 4 discos, 36 tavernas, 6 restaurants and 8 cafes. The emphasis is on drinking anything from draught beer to knockout cocktails. It can, and regularly does, get out of hand.
Eating:
With so many tavernas there is plenty of choice. Fast food and British menus are to the fore.
Public-transport:
Buses to Corfu Town up to 12 times a day.
Local-excursions:
Boats to Paxos and Antipaxos. Boat to Corfu Town; coach excursions around the island and to the Greek Village. Regular ferry to the mainland. See also Corfu Town.
