KONTOKALI
Area: Corfu
Country: Greece

Location:

On E coast, 4 miles NW of Corfu Town and airport.

Telephone code from UK:

30 26610

Position:

Off main road from Corfu Town, next to shallow Gouvia Bay. Predominantly flat coastal area with low peninsula curving around to side where most accommodation is located.

Description:

The small village is centred along a narrow street which runs parallel to the main N_S road and is lined with a few shops, rental agencies, bars and tavernas for about three-quarters of a mile. Many of the buildings are distinctly old but the village lacks Greek character. Much of the waterfront is taken up by a vast marina _ which also has a small general store, cafe and playground _ and the village predominantly caters for the needs of yacht people and locals.

Suitability:

Couples and yacht owners/charterers. Nothing in particular for children or teenagers.

Accommodation:

A few small hotels located on the main street and one large option on the peninsula. Private rooms for rent and a few apartments.

Shopping:

Limited to one or two souvenir outlets, a clothes boutique and a shop for sailing equipment. Cashpoint machine. Chemist and large supermarket on main road. Gouvia has a better choice but Corfu Town is also close at hand.

Beach:

Mix of sand and shingle with shallow water, although all beaches are at some distance from the village and the best choices are probably those at Gouvia, about half a mile away. There is a swimming pool, open to the public and free of charge, at the marina.

Entertainments:

Daytime: nothing in particular except enjoying the sun. Nightlife: sufficient bars and tavernas for low-key, relaxed evening entertainment. One or two offer live music and Greek nights.

Eating:

Limited choice of small restaurants: mainly fish tavernas and bars serving pub food.

Public-transport:

Half-hourly Corfu_Dassia service on main road. Long-distance "green buses" also stop, approximately hourly between Corfu and the N resorts. Scooter rental.

Local-excursions:

See Corfu Town.
