Description:
This once-sleepy fishing village has now blossomed into an overcrowded, busy town square filled with shops and tavernas _ and development continues apace. Tall trees offer some welcome shade. 6 miles of sandy beach is the area's biggest attraction. It is popular with visitors wishing to stay away from the noise of larger resorts.
Suitability:
Those who want a quiet mile of beach to themselves. Singles who want to get away from it all, couples or families of any age group.
Accommodation:
Good mixture of hotels plus basic self-catering properties.
Shopping:
Still only a village with a bakery its biggest attraction; shopping is limited to minimarkets and the usual mix of souvenir shops. Enough can be found to satisfy most day-to-day requirements.
Beach:
Perastikos Beach is close to the village, fairly well-protected from the NW tide and is mostly sand. The almost 6 miles of beach on Almiros Bay, where sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented, is of coarse sand. Beachside snack bars and even a few tavernas close by. Most water sports available.
Entertainments:
Daytime: generally flat countryside offers easy walking or biking, but the main attraction is the beach. Nightlife: plenty of bars and tavernas. Some hotels offer special Greek musical evenings.
Eating:
Small selection of tavernas and some fast-food eateries for local cuisine; larger hotels offer an international menu.
Public-transport:
Buses to either end of the island available on the national road. Numerous car and bicycle rental outlets.
Local-excursions:
Plentiful excursions to Minoan archaeological sites from local tour offices. Trips to the S side of island. Boat trips around the island or to Santorini.
